An automatic flue damper is a device which closes the heating flue when the furnace or boiler is "off" so that we won't continue to lose building heat up the chimney - it's a device to reduce heating costs and save on heating oil consumption. At left we show an automatic flue damper installed on a gas-fired heating boiler in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Learn MoreThere isn't as much latent heat in the flue gas with oil heat. You can 87% with non-condensing , you can only pull maybe 2 or 3% more with a condensing oil boiler. But then you need to be running return water below 120°. What type of heat emmitters will you be using? Will you have cool enough return water to make a condensing boiler worthwile?
Learn MoreA flue is basically a tube which takes smoke and gas away from a fire, often through a chimney stack. Flues may be made from many materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, clay and concrete. Usually flues for oil-fired boilers are made from steel.
Learn MoreIt is most effective when firing natural gas and distillate fuel oil and has little affect on boilers firing heavy oil. To comply with the more stringent regulations, burner modifications must be used in conjunction with other NOx reduction methods, such as flue gas recirculation.
Learn MoreBy equipped with the condenser (economizer) at the tail of the boiler, make full use of flue oil heat, decrease the exhaust smoke temperature, improve the thermal efficiency to 98%. 2. The condenser uses fanned tubes to increase the heating surface, improve heat transfer efficiency.
Learn MoreThe flexible flue systems from 80mm to 160mm are available for use with our gas and oil condensing boilers. Available in a selection of lengths from 10 meters to 50 meters. Transition sections from rigid to flex complete with integral riser support. Centralising brackets to ensure correct routing within the existing shaft.
Learn MoreThe majority of the heat is transferred radiantly to the boiler sections. The flue gas exits the burner tube at about 800'F and then runs the 3 pass gamut which has 8 baffle plates to slow the flue gases down and the flue gases finally exit the boiler at about 300'F.
Learn MoreKeep in mind that water vapor in the flue gas will condense if flue gas temperatures drop below about 120°F. Make sure, however, that you operate at the 300°F-350°F gross stack temperature with direct power venting only when the manufacturer has designed or approved his furnace or boiler for this arrangement.
Learn MoreVent Dampers. The most common retrofit is the addition of a vent (or flue) damper. A vent damper prevents chimney losses by closing off a boiler's vent when the boiler isn't firing. Steam boilers benefit from vent dampers more than hot-water boilers, and bigger boilers benefit more than smaller ones.
Learn MoreDepending on the size of the boiler, the flue must be positioned a certain distance from the nearest window, door, or air brick. Typically this is around 30-60cm if it’s to the side or above the opening, and a bit more if it’s below.
Learn MoreNew high efficiency oil-fired appliances require smaller flue sizes than older units. Where an old unit may require an eight-inch flue, the replacement unit’s installation instructions may call for a five-inch flue. This is a 60% reduction in flue size.

Learn MoreOil-Fired Boilers - Code Compliance Brief. A boiler typically uses a fuel such as natural gas, propane, or fuel oil in a vented combustion chamber, much like a furnace. Whereas a furnace directly transfers heat from combustion to supply air in the air distribution unit, a boiler heats a secondary transfer fluid (typically water,
Learn MoreIdeal for homes in northern regions, Lennox ® boilers integrate easily with existing radiator or under-floor heating systems for energy-efficient comfort, all winter long. With efficiency ratings of up to 95% AFUE, Lennox boilers can help you save hundreds of dollars each year in utility bills, compared to older and standard- efficiency boilers.
Learn More91.5% AFUE Condensing Oil Fired Boiler features a down flue heat exchanger constructed of mild and stainless steel. This flue passage design slows the exhaust gases, maximizing heat transfer and efficiency while yielding ultra low stack temperatures and quiet operation. Other retrofitting options that can improve a system's energy efficiency include installing programmable thermostats , upgrading ductwork in forced-air systems, and adding zone control for hot-water systems, an option discussed in Heat Distribution Systems .
Learn MoreThe barometric damper or draft regulator is a metal device built into the appliance exhaust flue (vent connector), typically 12 to 18 inches from the furnace or boiler. It ensures an adequate supply of draft air for the chimney. Its job is similar to the draft hood on a gas furnace, up to a point.
Learn MoreOil boilers that are intended for outdoor installation are open flue designs. These have a small flue termination built into the side or top casing. Air enters the appliance directly via vents in the appliance side casings.

Learn MoreIn addition, typical oil fired boilers are noisy—operating at above 60 decibels—similar to a vacuum cleaner. Energy Kinetics boilers are whisper quiet. Energy stealing draft regulators suck heated air out of the building and are not required on boilers with the most stable combustion.
Learn MoreOil Fired Boiler Cleaning. Oil-fired boilers produce heat by pumping fuel oil mist through a nozzle, which ignites into flames via ignition electrodes. Ducts and burner blowers distribute the hot air produced by this ignition to heat your home. Buildup of dust and debris reduces the efficiency of your boiler and might even make it unsafe to use.
Learn MoreWhat’s a boiler flue? This is a special pipe that takes away the fumes and provides the needed amount of fresh air to the boiler. Before installing a heating unit, a user should be well-acquainted with the gas boiler flue regulations.
Learn More“Condensing” furnaces and boilers are so named because they utilize an added “secondary” (typically finned tube) heat exchanger to extract additional heat from the flue gases, reducing flue gas temperature from a typical 500-600°F to around 100°F, and removing the “latent heat of vaporization”, which is the heat required to hold liquids as vapor in the flue gas.
Learn MoreThe relation between temperature difference in flue gas and supply air, the CO2 concentration in the flue gas, and the efficiency loss in the flue gas oil combustion, is expressed below: Example - Oil Combustion and Heat Loss in the Flue Gas. the flue gas loss can be estimated to approximately 16%.
Learn MoreOil Fired Boiler and Gas Water Heater Venting in Same Flue. At my inspection today, I saw an oil-fired boiler and gas water heater venting into the same flue. The flue was relined in 2008 for the oil furnace and has the flexible steel liner. The gas water heater was just replaced in late 2011 and it appears the house has had this combination running

Learn MoreA wood-fired heating appliance may be vented into the same chimney flue as an oil-fired heating appliance provided that they are on the same floor - in some jurisdictions. Combination wood-oil fired heating boilers join wood and oil burners in the same physical unit, making this exception necessary if the boiler is to be used at all.
Learn MoreThe boiler flue is a chimney that is used to remove waste gases created by the boiler during the combustion process. These waste gases are mostly Carbon Dioxide and steam which need to be correctly extracted from the property.
Learn MoreIn Figure 6-1 is a drawing which shows a simple install of an oil-fired appliance and we’ll set the flue pipe diameter at 6 inches. We have three pieces that are 18 inches, 24 inches and 23 inches in length that total 65 inches or about 5½ feet, and then we add in for the two 90 degree elbows at 11 feet each for a grand total of 27½ feet of TEPL.
